How do I protect my computer from viruses? for free?

People are always asking me:
How do I protect my computer from viruses?
Is there anything free to protect my computer?
what do you do with a trojan on your computer? help with removal?

Here is the suite of protection programs I use and recommend to everyone to use as well.

Most of the software I use is for free because they are usually made by good people and work the best – and its free. Practically the only things I pay for on the computer are my flickr account and webhosting.

There are a suite of 3 programs I use to prevent spyware, viruses, worms, etc from reaching my computer. Here they are:

1. Spybot – Search and Destroy
This is one of 2 programs i use to prevent spyware from coming to my PC.

2. Adaware

This and spybot always compete with eachother for best free anti-spyware. I like to have both at hand just in case.

3. Avast Anti-Virus
This wonderful program is powerful and free. It doesnt take up much of your resources on your computer at all.

These three programs are great because they are free and they won’t slow down your computer too much. Plus, you can trust these 3 companies (as of nov 2007).
I would never pay for programs like McCaffee – they put huge programs on your computer and use up your resources, causing your computer to slow down.

Also, You must use Firefox instead of internet explorer.

The newer, more protected, versions of IE will eat up your resources causing it to slow down. IE is the number one enemy of many hackers and they love to cause trouble with that. Firefox used to be the darling of computer geeks, so no one really messed with people running it, but that is starting to change little by little.

Why can’t I go to the page that comes up in my google search?

When I do a google search, I see the page which I want to in the description but when I click on the link another page comes up. How do I see that page???

This has been frustrating to me for a while, and for some reason I just gave up. I mean, it has to be in there, right? If its showing up, it must kept somewhere….
Little did I know that the solution was right underneath the listing….

On some listings, there are three links underneath:
Cached – Similar pages – Note this

If you click on the Cached link, you will see the page that shows on the listing. voila!

I have yet to care about the other two links here

Here is an interesting website that relates to all of this:

How Do I Remember All My Passwords? and tips for creating one…

“Hello! Help solve the problem.
Very often try to enter the site, but says that the password is not correct.
Regrettably use of remembering. Give like to be?
Thank you!”

How do I remember all my passwords?
So by this time there are a million sites that we are subscribed to. And every one you have to log in with a password…
the problem is now I literally have 100 different sites with many different passwords.
There are a few methods by which I keep my passwords in an orderly fashion. I use them all, and it still is very confusing. Here is the first of my solutions:

Keep a handwritten copy of all your passwords in a very safe, secret location. Probably a safe is the best place for this. It might be a good idea to have a centralized location for all your passwords. I don’t recommend having a file on your computer, because I don’t believe anything on your computer is 100 percent safe, plus there is no refund (like if your bank’s account is comprimised, they will protect and help you regain your assets), your just basically screwed if someone finds it. Do not keep this in your desk drawer, you idiot!

A second thing I do is have my password have varying degrees of security depending on which sites I am using. Some sites will get a very encrypted password system while others may not have as much. The reason for that something like a a forum based site will probably have less internal security than say, your bank’s website. Therefore, I do not want these cheesy websites having access to my very secure password which I use for sites dealing with money.
Also, you may want to consider if you will be sharing your password with anyone. For instance, at least 4 of my friends know my myspace password, its not very encrypted – its the last name of someone and a number. Could really be anyone, so bring it.

Tips for creating a password: If I am looking to crack someones password, I will usually try their name, their kids, their dog, their cat, their town, “password”, “123456”. Needless to say, you should not use any of these. Robots will try to access your password using real words generally – like dictionary words. Try using a crazy nickname for a friend, or a word you made up, mix a number or two in there – anything thats not in the dictionary. Try the word ‘gullible’. Another trick is to use an acronym for a phrase that you like, such as “Jeff rocks the house so why not you” that might be Jrthswny … Thats a really good password! Id love it if everyone recites this phrase 10 times a day!

Where do I paste code into myspace?

I want to pimp my myspace. I got the code need to put in.
So, where do I paste the code into my profile??

Essential question – thanks Rach

If you are putting a video into your profile, you put the video code in whichever box you want it to be shown.

As for layout changes and css code, you should put it inside the ABOUT ME section. If you want to add code to code you already put in, you should insert it somewhere inside the style tags – to be more precise, put it right before the line which has the “/style” in it. That basically says that this is the end to your formatting code.

You can basically put the code wherever though. Just try it. and Send your questions!
